Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Global Studies in the Arts & Humanities

The university requirements for bachelor's degree as described in the Undergraduate Education section of the MSU catalog; 120 credits, including general elective credits, are required for the BA degree in Global Studies.

The University's Tier II Writing requirement for this major is met by completing the course GSAH 450 (W).

The requirements of the College of Arts and Letters for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Proficiency in a second language as certified by the Assessment Coordinator in the Center for the Support of Language Teaching.

The following requirements for the major:

32-36 Credits

  • The following core Global Studies courses: 6 credits
  • GSAH 220 Global Interactions and Identities 3 credits
  • GSAH 230 Values, Experiences, and Difference in Global Contexts 3 credits
  • Topics Courses: 9 credits
  • GSAH 310 Conflict and Justice in a Global Setting 3 credits
  • GSAH 311 Crossing Boundaries/Changing Worlds 3 credits
  • GSAH 312 Media Mobility: Change, Access, Representation 3 credits
  • Theory Course: 3 credits
  • GSAH 450 (W) Global Theory Seminar 3 credits
  • Capstone Course: 2 Credits
  • GSAH 499 Senior Thesis 2 credits

An international experience through study abroad, study away, or internship; prior approval of the program advisor required.

A cognate of 12 credits from within the College of Arts and Letters. Both the cognate and the related courses must be approved by the student's academic advisor.

Affiliated Selective courses: 12-16 credits from a list of approved courses. (Substitute courses from the departments in the College of Arts and Letters and from departments in other Colleges may be used with prior approval from the program advisor).

Requirements for the Academic Minor in Global Studies in the Arts & Humanities

Total 18-19 credits

The following core Global Studies courses: 6 credits

  • GSAH 220 Global Interactions and Identities 3 credits
  • GSAH 230 Values, Experiences, and Difference in Global Contexts 3 credits

Two of the following Topic Courses: 6 credits

  • GSAH 310 Conflict and Justice in a Global Setting 3 credits
  • GSAH 311 Crossing Boundaries/Changing Worlds 3 credits
  • GSAH 312 Media Mobility: Change, Access, Representation 3 credits
  • GSAH 450 (W) Global Theory Seminar 3 credits

Additional Major in Global Studies

This option is designed to encourage students to combine a major in Global Studies with a major in another field, such as business, economics, international relations, political science, history, or another foreign language. Students electing this option must meet the requirements of the College of Arts and Letters for the BA degree and must complete the required courses for the major in Global Studies listed to fulfill the requirement of 32-36 semester credits. Students will also be required to pass an oral proficiency test administered by the Assessment Coordinator for the Center of the Support of Language Teaching, and to have an international experience through study abroad, study away, or internship; prior approval of the Program advisor required.
